  • 9:00 AM – 9:50 AM CT Creating a Skills-Driven Learning Continuum, by Bobbi Losee Vernon

Workshop Summary:

According to Credential Engine, there are almost 60,000 credential providers and 1.1 million credentials in the US. Yet, there is a critical shortage for talent and a critical demand for skill acquisition. This session introduces the fundamentals of the skills-based movement and how you can shift to a skills-driven L&D model using frameworks, tools, and resources that are freely available. It will include best practices on credentialing and assessment design and delivery for both internal talent pipelines—that is, the upskilling of existing staff—and external talent pipelines—that is, the acquisition of skilled hires and potentially partnering with workforce development programs. In this session, we’ll discuss the skills movement in hiring practices and why we need to adapt our L&D practices. We’ll look at free tools and resources and discuss how they can be used to inform a content and assessment learning continuum.

Goals:

  1. Examples will be provided to compare a digital badge to a digital credential to demonstrate the need for skills-based data mapping.
  2. The importance of learning and employment records (LERs) and comprehensive learner records (CLRs) in the skills movement will be emphasized.
  3. Writing rich skill descriptors (RSDs) and their use in skill libraries will be demonstrated.
  4. Frameworks and strategies used to inform the development of talent pipelines will highlighted.
  5. Tools that can be used to facilitate the mapping of job descriptions to skills libraries to learning/credentialing opportunities will be discussed, including AI.
  6. The appropriateness of digital badges versus digital credentials will be determined and how they can best serve the assessment of skill acquisition and proficiency over time.
  7. Tips will be provided on how to shift to creating learning that maps to skill proficiency, not just learning outcome statements.
